      Background. The engineered barriers system (EBS) is an integral part of the radioactive waste disposal facility. The EBS represents the manmade, engineered materials of a repository, including the waste form, waste canisters, concrete barrier, buffer materials, backfill, and seals, and can be used as physical and/or chemical obstructions to prevent or hinder the migration of radionuclides. The engineered barrier system is composed of the waste types, the surrounding waste package, other engineered items in the underground facility, and buffer and backfill material. Design features of the engineered barrier system are the waste type, the waste canister package, and a bentonite buffer.
